Indian Health Care Improvement Act passed.

Date: 1976

The act aims to raise the health status of Native communities to that of the general U.S. population within seven years. It increases funding for a range of programs including scholarships for Native health providers and new Native urban health centers, and allows Medicare and Medicaid to provide reimbursement coverage for care received through the Indian Health Service.

Funding for Native health will increase dramatically over coming years, from $17.4 million in 1975 to $194 million in 1984 and $762 million by 1994 (Pfefferbaum, 1996).
