Soman K. Das and Harihar Kohli, researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, succesfully file claims to cover the use of turmeric to heal surgical wounds and ulcers. In 1997 the patent will be withdrawn after the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research fights against the right of researchers in the United States to patent this plant, a form of traditional medicine.
