Researchers Levin and McDevitt separate hate crimes into three types: 1) perpetrators who commit crimes for excitement or thrill; 2) those who see themselves as defending their home or community from a perceived outsider; and 3) those who see it as their mission to fully disappear a kind of person or people they see as evil or inferior.
