After a delegation from Mongolia sends the World Health Organization (WHO) a request that the term "Mongoloid" no longer be used for people with Trisomy 21, WHO begins to use "Down syndrome" to refer to Trisomy 21. However, references to "Mongolism" will persist in medical literature until the 1970s.
