The first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights takes place.
Date: 1979
The march's platform calls for the following: a comprehensive lesbian and gay rights bill in Congress; a presidential executive order banning discrimination based on sexual orientation in the federal government, the military, and federally-contracted private employment; the end of all anti-lesbian/gay laws; the end of discrimination in lesbian mother and gay father custody cases; and the protection of lesbian and gay youth from any laws that are used to discriminate, oppress, and/or harass them in their homes, schools, jobs, and social environment.
