The drugs suppress the production of reproductive hormones and are initially approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat cisgender children undergoing early puberty before the age of 10. They will also begin to be prescribed off-label to transgender kids to relieve "dysphoria" and allow young people time to decide whether to pursue other gender-affirming care before the irreversible effects of sexual maturity. If the drugs are stopped with no additional treatment, puberty will occur.

In the 2020s, puberty blocking drugs will come under attack from Republican legislators across the country who will try to ban their use for gender-affirming purposes.
