First law passed to make marital rape illegal.

Date: 1976

SV
LLP

The first marital rape law is enacted in Nebraska, making it illegal for a husband to rape his wife.

Prior to this, marriage was determined an exception to all laws banning rape and other forms of sexual violence. Nebraska is the first to throw out this exception; many other states will quickly follow.
