The first almshouses dedicated to the sick and poor are set up in the New England colonies. The rich are treated at home, including receiving surgery in their own bedrooms. Almshouses will become the model that defines charity care, leading to the establishment of separate institutions such as orphanages, mental health facilities, and poorhouses.
