Findings of the Senate Special Committee on Aging released.

The committee finds that creating care standards for nursing homes and care facilities has lead to the closure of facilities, which are already in short supply, with no place to put the dispossessed patients.

The committee also states that the government has no power outside of threatening to close facilities for enforcing standards, and that state inspections largely focus on infrastructure rather than care.

When changes are advised, there is no means for following up to see if the promised changes have been made. The committee calls for a more thorough tracking system for nursing homes and care facilities, including a way to track and follow up on care violations. Their recommendations will result in Medicare and Medicaid providing funding to support services for the elderly, including for those residing in nursing homes and other care facilities.
