The group is a Seattle-based response to movements against rape and sexual violence that emerged in the 1970s, and the resulting institutionalization of crisis centers.

Communities Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) focuses on survivor-led community organizing, and is grounded in a radical Feminist of Color and disability justice ethic.
