By 1958, approximately 2 million people are dying from smallpox every year. Viktor Zhdanov, the Deputy Minister of Health for the Soviet Union, calls on the World Health Assembly to undertake a global initiative to eradicate smallpox. His call results in Resolution WHA11.54.
