Envisioned as an alternative to both home-based care and nursing homes, assisted living facilities are founded with the intention of enabling elders and people with disabilities to retain some degree of independence and privacy while also receiving care.

In reality, many of these facilities continue to underfunded, understaffed, and sites of neglect and abuse. Similarly to nursing homes, they are based on the "containment" logic of separating elders and disabled folks from their communities.
