Initially a fashion statement reserved for the elite, corsets, or "bodies," will soon spread across classes and be worn by women, including while laboring in fields and factories. The clothing piece will drastically limit women's mobility, contributing to the notion of a "weaker sex," and creating a cultural ideal of an unrealistic white feminine body shape.
